The Critical Zone Research Experience for Undergraduates (CZNet-REU) is now accepting applications from sophomores, juniors, or seniors in geoscience and other related fields! 

The CZNet-REU program is a 10-week paid summer NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) through May 28 - August 5, 2025. This program will place undergraduate students at one of the nearly 50 CZ Network research sites distributed in diverse geographic settings across the continental US. Critical Zone science is becoming more important as we try to understand the Earth’s living skin, from the top of the vegetation canopy to the depths of the groundwater and all the interactions taking place within that shape the environment and all life within it. Student training involves, developing research knowledge and skills, as well as interest in Critical Zone (CZ) science, learning to do interdisciplinary and collaborative science in a network, and connecting CZ science to society. 

What are the benefits?

  • Paid research experience: $6,000 stipend, travel subsidy, housing/meals subsidy, travel to and from the kick-off meeting, and research funds to support the project.
  • Network-wide exchange of data, information, and learning from students and researchers across the Critical Zone Collaborative Network.

Who is eligible? 

  • U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident of the United States.
  • Full-time undergraduate student in geosciences or related field.
  • Students who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the 2025-2026 academic year.
  • Students from community colleges or institutions with limited research opportunities are especially encouraged to apply.
