Workshops for Students

Whether you are trying to get started in research, seeking opportunities to improve your research skills, or looking to apply for graduate school, the University of Arizona offers workshops to help you along your journey.

Undergraduate Research Ambassador Presentations

The Undergraduate Research Ambassadors will present to student clubs, groups, or classrooms on any of the topics listed below. Email us at undergradresearch@arizona.edu to request a presentation!

Undergraduate Research Presentations

  • Introduction to Research: Why is research even important?  How can it help you in your academic and career goals?  What does research even look like?  Invite us to help explore your interests, values, and what big questions you might be able to answer through research. We can provide a full presentation on research exploration, or combine this with other presentations below.
  • Finding Research Opportunities:  Interested in participating in research? Not sure where to start? Learn how to find undergraduate research opportunities on and off campus! This presentation will get you started on your journey!
  • How to use your Federal Work-Study Benefit toward a Paid Research Experience: Learn how your Federal Work-Study benefit can help you create your own paid research experience. This presentation covers how the benefit works, how faculty benefit by hiring you, and gives you numbers and talking points to negotiate your own position. Don’t miss the next workshop for more tips and tricks on communicating with faculty to create a research experience that will take you to the next level!
  • Communicating with Faculty About Your Research Interests: Are you interested in contacting a faculty member about joining their research lab? Would you like to propose an independent study idea? Do you need to find a mentor for a thesis project? Do you need to ask for a letter of recommendation or other support toward your goals? You don’t need to take this step alone! This workshop will cover the nuts and bolts of reaching out to faculty about your research goals — when and how is the best way to approach a potential research mentor, and how to prepare for these conversations.
  • Applying to Research Programs:  What do research programs expect in an application?  What is the difference between a research proposal and a research statement?  Who should you approach for letters of recommendation, and how?  Invite the Undergraduate Research Ambassadors to de-mystify this process!
  • Student Researcher Panels: Connect with us to request a panel of undergraduate student researchers in your class or club! Student researchers will share their experiences with finding research and getting starting in their positions, as well as presenting and sharing their work.
  • Custom Undergraduate Research Workshop: Groups can request a custom workshop on research skills.  Mix and match from the topics above, or contact us about your unique needs.
