Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) - Application Deadline

Are you an undergraduate student? Interested in working at research lab over the summer?

The Office of Undergraduate Research at the University of Utah is offering the Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) for students interested in science and healthcare related research. 

The Office of Undergraduate Research at the University of Utah Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) provides undergraduates with an intensive paid 10-week research experience from May 19th, 2025 to August 1st, 2025, under the mentorship of a University of Utah faculty member. These student researchers work hand in hand with faculty mentors on project topics ranging from health, medicine, economics, robotics, nursing, psychology, architecture and more!  In addition to being paid $5,000 for a full-time summer research opportunity that lasts 10 weeks, SPUR scholars participate in professional development with our Educational Series and graduate school preparation with the Grad School Mini Expo. Research can be fun! With campus partners we organize social programming for researchers that is fun and an exciting opportunity to network with other researchers at the U. Activities includes bowling, volleyball, and food truck socials throughout the summer. Participants in SPUR have the opportunity to present their research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium and publish their work in Range: Undergraduate Research Journal.   

What are the benefits?

  • Students participating in SPUR will receive a stipend of $5,000 
  • For students who request housing, additional information will be requested. Participants pay $250; the rest of the on-campus housing expense is covered by the program
  • Participants relocating to Salt Lake City for the duration of the program may be eligible to receive a travel reimbursement up to $500 total for roundtrip travel-related expenses to/from Salt Lake City

Who is eligible to apply?

  • eligible to work in the United States
  • able to commit to approximately 35-40 hours per week of employment at the University of Utah for the entire duration of the program 
  • at least 18 years old by May 19, 2025 (required if you wish to use on-campus housing; preferred if you will not be using on-campus housing)
