When
Are you a premed or prevet student searching for clinical research? Interested in physiology research?
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and Michigan State University (MSU) are sponsoring the 10-week Biomedical Research for University Students in Health Sciences (BRUSH) Summer Research Program at MSU for undergraduate and veterinary students interested in the biomedical sciences and research-related careers .The goal of this program is to provide hands-on research exposure and graduate school preparation opportunities for undergraduate students who are from populations that are underrepresented in biomedical research. This program also enrolls veterinary students from populations that are underrepresented in biomedical research with the goal of providing hands-on research and increasing awareness of and preparation for research-related career options. Participating students conduct hands-on, hypothesis-driven research on topics that relate to environmental sciences and heart, lung, and blood health; specific projects may be on hypertension, immunotoxicology, tuberculosis, asthma, or the health effects of air pollutants, among others. Students who do not have any prior research experience are especially encouraged to apply.
The program runs from May 20th, 2024 to August 2nd, 2024.
What activities will be included?
- Mentored Research: Be matched with a faculty mentor to create a research project on your research interests while learning experimental techniques and reviewing scientific literature.
- Mid-Michigan Symposium for Undergraduate Research Experiences (Mid-SURE): Present your research poster to MSU students, faculty, and peers from other summer research programs at the end of the program.
- Field trips: Explore graduate programs, medical schools, and veterinary schools at MSU and other institutions in the region.
- National Conferences: Present your research poster at competitive national conferences, such as Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS), the Society of Toxicology’s Annual Meeting and ToxExpo, or the Veterinary Scholars Symposium (VSS).
