NROS397 - VIP-CURE: Brain Communication Networks (SP24)
Are you interested in getting involved in research? Not sure where to start? Consider earning course credit and doing team-based research projects on genes implicated in neurodegenerative diseases! The course, called a Vertically Integrated Project course (VIP) in Brain Communication Networks (NROS 397), is for 3 credits and allows you to do real discovery while applying knowledge from your courses. See what students have done in this course here (wiki site). More information about the course format can also be found on Dr. Martha Bhattacharya’s website.
We are currently testing genes predicted to be involved in Amyloid Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) for their effects on motor function in Drosophila (fruit flies), and we expect this research to continue into next semester. You would be doing genetics, bioinformatics, behavioral testing, and video analysis along with a team of your peers. These types of courses count as research credits in the NSCS program, MCB program, and other majors. Many other topics across biology, medicine, and other disciplines are also available as research courses in the VIP program; please see the list here: https://uavip.arizona.edu
The VIP in Brain Communication Networks enrolls by application only (current enrollment cap of 24). Applications are now open! Fill in an application here: https://forms.gle/qkvrutVw3wmVeQVF9
Important: Applications are due by 5pm on Friday Nov 3rd. You will be notified if you are accepted or on the waitlist by Tuesday, November 7th. Accepted students will be enrolled in the course by Maria Rodriguez, NSCS Program Manager.
If you have questions about the course, please reach out to Dr. Martha Bhattacharya (marthab1@arizona.edu).
