Finding Voice and Belonging at a National Conference
Undergraduate researcher Damaris Lent had the transformative opportunity to attend the American Indian Cancer Foundation (AICAF) conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As one of the youngest participants, Damaris initially felt intimidated. More than 200 professionals were in attendance, holding PhDs, MPHs, and years of experience surrounding her. But this feeling was soon overshadowed by pure inspiration as attendees praised her dedication and urged her to continue her education. Their words of support affirmed that even young educators can make a meaningful impact in the field of cancer.
Throughout the conference, Damaris honed essential skills in public speaking, teamwork, community engagement, networking, and active listening. What made the experience truly unforgettable was the deep integration of Native American culture and knowledge. Powwow singers, traditional healers, and medicine were woven seamlessly into the program, creating a space where she felt seen, respected, and proud of her heritage.
We thank you, Damaris, for your active involvement in undergraduate research and your commitment to your ancestral identity. We are honored to have you represent the University of Arizona, and cannot wait to see the impact you will make.
