Biology Research Abroad: Vistas Open! (BRAVO!) Program - Application Deadline

Are you already involved in research at the University of Arizona? Looking to take the next steps and expand your intellectual horizons abroad?
The Summer 2025 applications for the Biology Research Abroad: Vistas Open! (BRAVO!) Program are now open and welcoming applicants!
What is the program about? The Biology Research Abroad: Vistas Open! (BRAVO!) Program provides up to $8,000 in funding for UArizona undergraduates to conduct biologically-related research abroad with a foreign collaborator of their UArizona faculty research mentor for 10-12 weeks in the summer. This is an excellent opportunity for a student to learn about and be involved in international scientific collaboration, especially for students who wouldn’t ordinarily pursue an opportunity abroad due to limitations in funding or lack of experience in international travel. BRAVO! is unique from Study Abroad; while a study abroad experience centers around the student’s choice of destination, course selection, and language, BRAVO! focuses on existing relationships between UArizona researchers and their scientific collaborators and invites students to be a part of creating tighter connections between them through a research experience abroad and participation in the international scientific community.
What are the requirements for student applicants?
- Interest: Must be interested in biologically-related international research experience to enhance their academic, career, or personal goals.
- Research Experience: Has (or will have by November 2024) a minimum of 6 months of previous research experience.
- Character: Is mature and reliable, capable of functioning independently in an unfamiliar country.
- Priority will be given to students who have not traveled outside the U.S. before, or have limited means to do so (i.e. are low-income, first-generation college students, etc.)
What are the requirements for the UArizona mentor of the student applicant?
- Foreign Collaboration: Have an established relationship with a foreign collaborator who could serve well as a BRAVO! student’s mentor abroad, both in terms of content and scientific projects as well as at the interpersonal level (those who enjoy working with and mentoring undergraduates, etc.).
- Mentorship: Is willing to assist the student in connecting with your foreign collaborator, and can work with the student and collaborator together to identify a suitable project for a 10-12 week summer research project to be conducted at the foreign lab.
Interested in applying? Students must contact to Jennifer Cubeta, UBRP Director, at cubeta@arizona.edu to request official BRAVO! application materials. The deadline to submit all application materials for Summer 2025 is November 1, 2024.
