Professionalism in the Lab Workshop
This workshop is part of the Research Skills Workshop Series.
Join Dr. Demetra Skaltsas for a "Professionalism in the Lab" workshop, where we equip you with the essential skills and knowledge to thrive in a laboratory setting. This workshop is designed to empower you to set yourself up for success, navigate ethical dilemmas with confidence, and master the art of professional communication.
Throughout the workshop, you'll delve into crucial topics such as record keeping, effective communication strategies, conflict resolution techniques, and ethical considerations. We'll explore how to conduct yourself professionally in the lab environment, from interviewing the interviewer to understanding the chain of command.
Upon successful completion of the workshop, participants will have an opportunity to gain a certificate in lab culture professionalism, ethical decision-making, professional communication, and proper documentation practices.
The workshop will be offered on the following days/times:
- Saturday, September 14, 2024, 9:30am-2pm (30-minute break included & food provided)
- Sunday, September 15, 2024, 11am-3:30pm (30-minute break included & food provided)
- Saturday, September 21, 2024, 9:30am-2pm (30-minute break included & food provided)

You will also have the option to stay for an additional hour to learn about Faculty-Student Contracts. These are important to:
- Set Clear Goals and Objectives: Define specific research objectives and expected outcomes to align student and mentor efforts.
- Establish Structured Support and Feedback: Regular meetings and continuous feedback ensure effective mentorship and progress tracking.
- Determine Professional Training and Documentation: Comprehensive training procedures and proper documentation practices prepare students for professional research standards.
