Dr. Lianyang Zhang holds the Delbert R. Lewis Distinguished Professorship and serves as Director of the SMART (Sustainable Materials and Recycling Technologies) Laboratory in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Mechanics. His expertise spans rock characterization, ground control, deep foundations, waste recycling and utilization, sustainable and green construction materials, eco-friendly dust control, and mine tailings remining. Dr. Zhang has authored two books, co-edited three volumes, and published over 200 peer-reviewed technical papers. He ranked 4,724 in the 2025 World Top 2% Scientists list. He serves as an Associate Editor, Managing Editor, and Editorial Board Member for five international journals. He is an ASCE Fellow, a former chair of the ASCE Rock Mechanics Committee, and currently serves on the ASCE Geoenvironmental Committee and the Board of the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics. Dr. Zhang earned his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT.
