Undergraduate Biology Research Program (UBRP) and Corresponding Fellowships - Applications DUE!

When

5 p.m., Feb. 1, 2023

UBRP is an educational program designed to teach students science by pairing them with faculty mentors and involving them in research projects in a wide variety of biological fields including basic sciences, translational medicine, biomedical engineering, environmental sciences, agriculture, pharmacy, and more.  Students are paid to conduct research full-time lab during the summer where they develop an understanding of the scientific method and receive a realistic view of biological research.  They also participate in professional development workshops, learn about the breadth of biological research, present their research at the annual UBRP Conference, and acquire the tools necessary to be successful in their post-graduate endeavors, including graduate or professional programs, and/or careers in research, health care, business, education, law, and more.

To be eligible for UBRP, students must:

  • Be a current degree-seeking University of Arizona undergraduate, enrolled in a minimum of seven credit hours. Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP) undergraduates are eligible for UBRP prior to completing the Bachelor’s degree. AMP students who have completed a Bachelor’s degree are no longer considered undergraduates and are not eligible for UBRP.

  • Be in good academic standing.

  • Have an interest in biological research.

  • Be an American citizen, permanent resident, or in the case of foreign nationals, hold a visa allowing him/her to work in this country. Students who do not fall into these categories are permitted to participate in UBRP on a voluntary, unpaid basis.

  • Be able to commit to a full-time summer research position (35 hours/week for 12 weeks of the summer) and attend UBRP Orientation (Monday, May 15, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.).

American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics’ Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (ASPET SURF): Application due February 1st, 2023 at 5pm Arizona time

Each summer, five UBRP students are selected to receive an American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics’ Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (ASPET SURF). These students conduct research in the areas of pharmacology, drug discovery, and drug development with faculty mentors who are members of ASPET, and are partially funded by ASPET. ASPET SURF students participate in all UBRP activities, but additionally enjoy free student membership in ASPET (which entitles them to apply for travel funds to present at ASPET meetings as well as other benefits) as well a summer networking lunch with fellow ASPET students and mentors.

Interested students should apply for ASPET SURF by submitting an application to UBRP and marking the ASPET interest box. If selected for UBRP, students would then choose an ASPET mentor with whom to work. Current UArizona ASPET faculty members are faculty in the College of Medicine and the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, including Qin Chen, Nathan Cherrington, Abhijit Date, Xinxin Ding, Frank Porreca, Arthur Riegel, Patrick Ronaldson, Rick Schnellmann, John Streicher, and Todd Vanderah.

Data Sciences Academy - UBRP Fellows

The Data Sciences Academy and UBRP are partnering together to provide research experiences to undergraduates whose interests are in the life sciences and whose academic background has a strong data science component, including mathematics, statistics, and/or computer science. Over the next decade, the Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates that three quarters of the new jobs in the STEM workforce will have a serious data science component. With new challenges in health science, environmental science, and agricultural science, the life sciences are certainly at the center of this new way of doing science and engineering. DSA/UBRP provides its participants with a privileged glimpse into the future of science by giving them hands-on experience in biological research grounded in data sciences.

Interested in participating? Submit an application to UBRP and mark the DSA/UBRP interest box.
